Caravan squeeing fan belt again!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:42 pm

My 93 still squeels when its raining even after they replaced the idler
washer with a bevelled unit as per the TSB.

Anyone still have the same problem. I don’t want to replace fan belts
every 15k miles because that’s what the squeeling does. It chews up one of
the belt sides.

It’s probably constantly grinding away at the belt side when its dry but
its quiet. But once it rains, there’s enough water lubrication to allow
the belt to slip along the side instead of grinding thereby causing the
squelling sound.

Is there anouther TSB because the first one didn’t fix the problem??

?'96 Neon Brake Fluid?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:41 pm

The Owner’s Manual for the ’96 Dodge Neon (without ABS) specifies
"DOT 2" Brake Fluid. Is this correct or is this a misprint?
I would have expected to see "DOT 3" listed.
If you can shed some light on this for me, please respond.

        Thank you,

        Lothar.

Hissing Noise in Intrepid

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:41 pm

On my 94 Intrepid I have  noticed a hissing noise coming from behind my
dash – It appears to be coming from the heater / fan unit but I am not
certain. It sounds like a vacum hose leak or something. It has been
hapening for the past year.

I have had a aftermarket Remote starter(Prestige brand) installed on my
car (Has worked great for 2 years) and this has just stopped working.
The reason I mention this is it does work on a vacum switch but the
above noise has been happening for some time. The performance of the car
and everthing has been good just an annoying noise. I did  have it in
for the 40000 km tune up and they found nothing unusual.

Any suggestons

Misleading Stratus ad?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:40 pm

I noticed an ad for the Stratus in recent magazines where they list the
standard features of the Stratus ES.  It includes ABS and electric doo dads
but also a SOHC 16 valve engine and 5 speed transmission.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought you can’t get the ES with a
5 speed.  You can only get the automatic or autostick.

Isn’t it deceptive to say it comes standard with these features when you have
to pay more for the automatic and have no choice about it?

 Gm> That’s weird that the 3.0 V6 can only tow 1000 lbs.  I have a 88
Gm> sundance with the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder motor it can tow up to 2000
Gm> lbs.   That’s one area where they all could improve on (tow capacity)
Gm> . I know  you get the Grand Caravan with the tow package and tow 3500
Gm> lbs.  but who  can afford it ?

I have an ’88 Grand Caravan with a 3.0L, no trailer package (the dealer
didn’t know what a tow package was).  I think towing capacity has a lot
more to do with wind resistance than with weight.  I initially tried
towing one of those little bitty molded Canadian travel trailers and had
trouble holding highway speeds.  Then I got a Trail Manor (Hard Walls
that fold down MUCH better than a HI/LO.  It weighs at least 2500lb
empty and IS BIG, but folds down lower than the top of the van.  I have
loaded it and the van full and gone coast to coast with it at 60-65mph
all day long, no problems over the 7 years I have had the trailer.  I
added a Hayden oil cooler, and a Hayden trans cooler in line with the
existing trans cooler.  Recently I traded the stock radiator for a
double set of tubes one that fit right in.  This lets the van grind
through the back roads in the Rockies all day long.  But the original
radiator handled any freeway driving, with the trailer.

DO NOT GO TO DEALERS.  Go to independent repair shops.  According to
CHECKBOOKS (the consumer reports for the DC area) they have repeatedly
found that dealers rarely have a single qualified mechanic.  (Personally
I have never found a dealer with a mechanic even reasonably familiar
with the repair of the dealer’s own brand of car.  Independent shops are
reported to have far and away better qualified (and paid) mechanics,
because of the nature of dealer – manufacturer relationship on underpaid
warantee work (according to Checkbooks).

My favorite personal experience is with a Pontiac Dealer who had my car
for 4 extra days, with evasive explanations.  I went back and talked to
"mr. goodwrench."  The actual wait was for a similar car to come in so
they could figure out how to put the carburetor back together.  (This
was a five year old Pontiac of a very popular model, engine and carb.)

Neon – Major Eng. Prob. – 3000 miles – Help

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:39 pm

I have a new neon sport coupe with the SCCA package (DOHC eng., suspension, 4 wheel disks, alum wheels,etc.).
There is a randomly intermittant engine problem.  Without warning car will
vigorously "buck" (violently decellerate if you prefer) 2 to 3 times and then will
resume.  This is startlingly sudden.  That is, no warning.  Happens at all engine
speeds and loads.  The car has been with the dealer for 2 weeks now.  They
intend to replace the computer and throttle body (but can’t get parts).
Seems like bad pre-ignition to me.  Anybody have any ideas?  Oh yeah.  I also
have a speedometer that (intermittantly again) produces random numbers.
You can have one without the other.
                        Thanks.   … Joe
